Gov. Steve Sisolak appointed Secretary-Treasurer for the Culinary Workers Union Geoconda Argüello-Kline to the Las Vegas Stadium Authority Board of Directors Monday

The governor also announced he reappointed Steve Hill as chair to the Stadium Authority.

In December Argüello-Kline’s nomination to the Stadium Authority was voted down by the Clark County Commission, despite several officials speaking in favor of her appointment and arguing the stadium board needed more diversity as well as a voice to represent the working class.

Argüello-Kline’s appointment had been supported by Democratic Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford and Nevada Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen as well as former Democratic Sen. Harry Reid.

“We want the stadium to be successful and now that the construction is nearly over, the next phase is now: Job training, equal opportunity hiring, and workforce development,” Argüello-Kline said Monday.

“I am pleased to accept the appointment to the Clark County Stadium Authority Board of Directors. The Culinary Union thanks Governor Sisolak for recognizing the value of having a hospitality expert on the Stadium Authority Board and for the Governor’s commitment to diversity at all levels of government.”

The Culinary Union is the largest local chapter of the nationwide Unite Here labor group. Culinary Local 226 and associate Bartenders Union Local 165 represent 60,000 workers employed in the Las Vegas and Reno gaming and hospitality industries.

Argüello-Kline has worked in the hospitality industry in Las Vegas for more than thirty years and currently holds the following positions: Vice President of the UNITE- HERE International Union; Trustee of the Culinary Academy of Las Vegas; Trustee of the Culinary Pension Fund; Trustee of the Health and Welfare Fund; Trustee of the St. Louis Square; Trustee of the UNITE HERE Health; Chair Women of the Board of the IWCP (Citizenship Project); and Committee Member for the Center for American Progress Advisory Board.

Hill is currently the President/COO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVVCVA), which he joined after serving as the director of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) where he was appointed in 2011 by former Gov. Brian Sandoval.

“I‘m pleased to reappoint Steve Hill as chair and appoint Geoconda Argüello-Kline to the Stadium Authority,” Sisolak said. “I’m confident that Steve’s steady leadership and expertise, combined with Geo’s deep understanding of Nevada’s service industry and experience in workforce development will create necessary continuity and dynamic representation on this Board.”
